Etymology of Roscarrock

What does the name Roscarrock mean?

Roscarrock is a name that was brought to England by the ancestors of the Roscarrock family when they migrated to the region after the Norman Conquest in 1066. The Roscarrock family lived in Cornwall, at the Manor of Roscarrock, from whence they took their name.

Early Origins of the Roscarrock family

The surname Roscarrock was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Rosscarrock in that shire about the time of the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Conjecturally, they are descended from either Nigel or Alfred, two Norman nobles who held the lands of Roscarrock in the parish of Endellion from the Count of Mortain at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086.

"The manor of Treworder, [in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall] from which the parish derived its original name, belonged at a very remote period to the ancient family of Roscarrock, and was one of the last estates which they held in this county. The barton of Lower Treworder, which was probably the seat of the Roscarrocks, is now possessed in fee by the Rev. Henry Hawkins Tremayne, who inherits it in right of his lady, who was one of the co-heiresses of the family of Hearle. According to Hals, Crone or Croan in this parish, was formerly a seat of the Roscarrocks, by which family it was sold to the Hills, and by the Hills to the Hoblyns, by whom it was possessed in the days of this author." 1

Migration of the Roscarrock family

For many English families, the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. For such families, the shores of Ireland, Australia, and the New World beckoned. They left their homeland at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. Many arrived after the long voyage sick, starving, and without a penny. But even those were greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. Numerous English settlers who arrived in the United States and Canada at this time went on to make important contributions to the developing cultures of those countries. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Roscarrock were among those contributors: John Rosscarrick who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1826.
