The ancient roots of the Babot family name are in the Anglo-Saxon culture. The name Babot comes from when the family lived in Suffolk. The surname Babot refers to a person who came from Babe, which may refer to an area known as the Hundred of Babegh in the county of Suffolk. The place-name literally means Babba's enclosure. Le Babbe is a nickname from babe, a Middle English word used c. 1230 meaning 'infant, young child'. 3

The surname Babot was first found in Suffolk where Alwinus Babbe was listed in the Feet of Fines for 1198. A few years later, Richard Babbe was found in the Pipe Rolls for Devon in 1203. Ralph le Babb(e) was found in Wiltshire in 1199 and Walter le Babbe in the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex in 1327. 3

Migration of the Babot family

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Babot arrived in North America very early: Edward Babb, who settled in Virginia in 1639; Patrick Babe arrived in New England in 1761; George, James, John, Luke, and Owen, all arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1833 to 1858. In Newfoundland, John Bab(b) settled in St. John'.
