Early Origins of the Tigay family
The surname Tigay was first found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Tickhill in that shire, somewhere between Bridlington, Pockington, and Dadsley, all of which are on the outskirts of Tickhill. It is likely that they held a family seat there after the Conquest; however there is a possibility that there is some association with the Norman noble Roger de Bully who held estates in Nottingham and Yorkshire, and he built a castle at Tickhill, four miles to the northwest of the Honour of Blyth in Nottingham. Records of the name include William de Tikehill, listed in the Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire in 1175; and Roger de Tikell listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Derbyshire in 1327.

Migration of the Tigay family
To escape the uncertainty of the political and religious uncertainty found in England, many English families boarded ships at great expense to sail for the colonies held by Britain. The passages were expensive, though, and the boats were unsafe, overcrowded, and ridden with disease. Those who were hardy and lucky enough to make the passage intact were rewarded with land, opportunity, and social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families went on to be important contributors to the young nations of Canada and the United States where they settled. Tigays were some of the first of the immigrants to arrive in North America: Peter and Werner Tickel who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1754; George Tickel, who came to Philadelphia in 1808; Michael Tickel, who arrived in Maryland in 1765.
