England Etymology of RosscarrockWhat does the name Rosscarrock mean? The name Rosscarrock was brought to England by the Normans when they conquered the country in 1066. The ancestors of the Rosscarrock family lived in Cornwall, at the Manor of Roscarrock, from whence they took their name. Early Origins of the Rosscarrock familyThe surname Rosscarrock was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Rosscarrock in that shire about the time of the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Conjecturally, they are descended from either Nigel or Alfred, two Norman nobles who held the lands of Roscarrock in the parish of Endellion from the Count of Mortain at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086. "The manor of Treworder, [in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall] from which the parish derived its original name, belonged at a very remote period to the ancient family of Roscarrock, and was one of the last estates which they held in this county. The barton of Lower Treworder, which was probably the seat of the Roscarrocks, is now possessed in fee by the Rev. Henry Hawkins Tremayne, who inherits it in right of his lady, who was one of the co-heiresses of the family of Hearle. According to Hals, Crone or Croan in this parish, was formerly a seat of the Roscarrocks, by which family it was sold to the Hills, and by the Hills to the Hoblyns, by whom it was possessed in the days of this author." 1 Early History of the Rosscarrock familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Rosscarrock research. Migration of the Rosscarrock familyFaced with the chaos present in England at that time, many English families looked towards the open frontiers of the New World with its opportunities to escape oppression and starvation. People migrated to North America, as well as Australia and Ireland in droves, paying exorbitant rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, but those who did see the shores of North America were welcomed with great opportunity. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America carried the name Rosscarrock, or a variant listed above: John Rosscarrick who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1826.
