The rich and ancient history of the Meddlemis family name dates back to the time of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It comes from Michaelmas, derived from the season or day that the child was born.

Meddlemis Early Origins

The surname Meddlemis was first found in Lincolnshire where they held a family seat at Middlemarsh, some say before the Norman Conquest in 1066, but like most Anglo Saxon families they soon found the oppression of the Norman intolerable, and moved north to Scotland where they obtained lands from a grant from the King of Scotland and became tenants of the Abbey of Kelso.

The Great Migration

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Among the first immigrants of the name Meddlemis, or a variant listed above to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were : George Middlemane (Middlemast) settled in Virginia in 1679; William Middlemass, who came to Virginia in 1723; James Middlemiss, who came to America in 1726.
