Etymology of IngpintWhat does the name Ingpint mean? The name Ingpint belongs to the early history of Britain, it's origins lie with the Anglo-Saxons. It is a product of their having lived in the region of Inkpen near Hungerford in Berkshire. Ingpint is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree. Early Origins of the Ingpint familyThe surname Ingpint was first found in West Berkshire at Inkpen, a village and civil parish that dates back to Saxon times when the village was named Ingepenne c. 935. 1 By the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, the village's name was Hingepene 2 and was literally derived from the Old English words "ing" (meaning hill or peak) and the Celtic or Old English word "penn" (meaning hill or enclosure.) 1 The manor of Pillaton in Cornwall which in Doomsday Survey is called Pileton, belonged to the Earl of Moreton at that time. This manor, about the reign of Edward I. was in the family of Inkpen. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Ingpint were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: John Inkpen, who settled in New England in 1756.
