The ancestors of the Hollghan family lived among the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. Hollghan was a name given to a holy man who was a priest or friar. The surname Hollghan originally derived from the Old English word Hol or Hool. Another reference claims the name was derived from the Old English words "holh" + "mann" and literally meant "dweller by a hollow." [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

The Great Migration

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Hollghans to arrive on North American shores: John Holman, who settled in Nantasket Massachusetts in 1630; William Holman settled in Cambridge Mass in 1630; Edward Holman settled in Boston in 1632.
