Backmen History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The name Backmen first arose amongst the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from their having lived in the parish of Pakenham found in the county of Suffolk. This place-name was a habitation name which denoted where the Backmen family held their land. The original bearers of the Backmen surname took their name from the parish where they dwelt, so that they could be identified whenever they moved from their original dwelling place.

Early Origins of the Backmen family

The surname Backmen was first found in Suffolk at Pakenham, a village that dates back to Saxon times when it was first listed as Pakenham c. 950. By the Domesday Book of 1086, the village was listed as Pachenham [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

and literally meant "homestead or village of a man called Pacca," from the Old English personal name + "ham." [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

Migration of the Backmen family to the New World and Oceana

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Backmen arrived in North America very early: George Pakenham settled in Virginia in 1643.
