The Boernician-Scottish Woodby family lived in any of a number of places of the same name in Ayrshire, Kincardine, and Midlothian. The place-name Woodby comes from the Old English words, wudu and burna, which mean wood and stream. The place-name referred to a stream which ran through the woods. The original bearer of the surname Woodby would have lived near such a stream. The Boernician-Scottish people who came to North America were often nearly penniless when they arrived, and brought very few personal effects with them. Much Scottish heritage was lost in the process, and it is only this century that highland games, Clan societies, and other patriotic Scottish organizations have helped the ancestors of Scots to rediscover their national legacy.
