Etymology of Wintertone

What does the name Wintertone mean?

The Wintertone surname is thought to be derived from several place names in South Humberside and in Norfolk. These places names come from the Old English "winter," and "tun," which meant enclosure or settlement; perhaps referring to a place only inhabited in the winter.

Early Origins of the Wintertone family

The surname Wintertone was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat. It has also been suggested a family of this name came to Britain following the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William, Duke of Normandy, having prevailed over King Harold, granted most of Britain to his many victorious Barons. There was a Tochus (Touchet) of Winterton listed in the Domesday Book, 1 who held lands in Norfolk. Touchet came from the family of Notre-Dame du Touchet in Normandy and arrived with William the Conqueror.

Thomas Winterton (fl. 1391), was an early English theological writer, a native of Winterton, Lincolnshire, and an Augustinian hermit of Stamford. 2
