Etymology of Rosscarrok

What does the name Rosscarrok mean?

Rosscarrok is one of the many names that the Normans brought with them when they conquered England in 1066. The Rosscarrok family lived in Cornwall, at the Manor of Roscarrock, from whence they took their name.

Early Origins of the Rosscarrok family

The surname Rosscarrok was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Rosscarrock in that shire about the time of the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Conjecturally, they are descended from either Nigel or Alfred, two Norman nobles who held the lands of Roscarrock in the parish of Endellion from the Count of Mortain at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086.

"The manor of Treworder, [in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall] from which the parish derived its original name, belonged at a very remote period to the ancient family of Roscarrock, and was one of the last estates which they held in this county. The barton of Lower Treworder, which was probably the seat of the Roscarrocks, is now possessed in fee by the Rev. Henry Hawkins Tremayne, who inherits it in right of his lady, who was one of the co-heiresses of the family of Hearle. According to Hals, Crone or Croan in this parish, was formerly a seat of the Roscarrocks, by which family it was sold to the Hills, and by the Hills to the Hoblyns, by whom it was possessed in the days of this author." 1

Rosscarrok Spelling Variations

Anglo-Norman names tend to be marked by an enormous number of spelling variations. This is largely due to the fact that Old and Middle English lacked any spelling rules when Norman French was introduced in the 11th century. The languages of the English courts at that time were French and Latin. These various languages mixed quite freely in the evolving social milieu. The final element of this mix is that medieval scribes spelled words according to their sounds rather than any definite rules, so a name was often spelled in as many different ways as the number of documents it appeared in. The name was spelled Rosscarrock, Roscarrock, Roscarrick, Rosscarrick and others.

Migration of the Rosscarrok family

Because of the political and religious discontent in England, families began to migrate abroad in enormous numbers. Faced with persecution and starvation at home, the open frontiers and generally less oppressive social environment of the New World seemed tantalizing indeed to many English people. The trip was difficult, and not all made it unscathed, but many of those who did get to Canada and the United States made important contributions to the young nations in which they settled. Some of the first North American settlers with Rosscarrok name or one of its variants: John Rosscarrick who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1826.
