England Etymology of RoscarrackWhat does the name Roscarrack mean? Roscarrack is one of the many new names that came to England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Roscarrack family lived in Cornwall, at the Manor of Roscarrock, from whence they took their name. Early Origins of the Roscarrack familyThe surname Roscarrack was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Rosscarrock in that shire about the time of the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Conjecturally, they are descended from either Nigel or Alfred, two Norman nobles who held the lands of Roscarrock in the parish of Endellion from the Count of Mortain at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086. "The manor of Treworder, [in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall] from which the parish derived its original name, belonged at a very remote period to the ancient family of Roscarrock, and was one of the last estates which they held in this county. The barton of Lower Treworder, which was probably the seat of the Roscarrocks, is now possessed in fee by the Rev. Henry Hawkins Tremayne, who inherits it in right of his lady, who was one of the co-heiresses of the family of Hearle. According to Hals, Crone or Croan in this parish, was formerly a seat of the Roscarrocks, by which family it was sold to the Hills, and by the Hills to the Hoblyns, by whom it was possessed in the days of this author." 1 Early History of the Roscarrack familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Roscarrack research. Roscarrack Spelling VariationsAnglo-Norman names are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. When the Normans became the ruling people of England in the 11th century, they introduced a new language into a society where the main languages of Old and later Middle English had no definite spelling rules. These languages were more often spoken than written, so they blended freely with one another. Contributing to this mixing of tongues was the fact that medieval scribes spelled words according to sound, ensuring that a person's name would appear differently in nearly every document in which it was recorded. The name has been spelled Rosscarrock, Roscarrock, Roscarrick, Rosscarrick and others. Migration of the Roscarrack familyFor many English families, the political and religious disarray that plagued their homeland made the frontiers of the New World an attractive prospect. Thousands migrated, aboard cramped disease-ridden ships. They arrived sick, poor, and hungry, but were welcomed in many cases with far greater opportunity than at home in England. Many of these hardy settlers went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Among early immigrants bearing the name Roscarrack or a variant listed above were: John Rosscarrick who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1826.
