The name Rafe is derived from the Old Norse given name Randolph, which itself comes from the Old German words, "rad," meaning "counsel," and "wolf," meaning "wolf."

Rafe Early Origins

The surname Rafe was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. It is thought that the name first arrived in Britain well before the Conquest, with Scandinavian settlers, and then bearers of the name also arrived with the Normans.
