The Anglo-Saxons of Britain first developed the name Palframan. It was a name given to someone who was a person who worked as the palfreyman, who was in charge of the palfreys. This occupational surname was first derived from the Old French word parfrement which referred to the individual who saddled horses for women. The term palfrey usually referred to the most expensive and highly-bred types of riding horse during the Middle Ages.

Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations.
