Early Origins of the O'Finelan family

The surname O'Finelan was first found in Delvin, where they held a family seat as chiefs Teffia or Westmeath. The clann, along with the O'Skullys were of the Dalcassian race, one of the founding races of Ireland. Irish history was greatly influenced by the Norman invasion of 1172, and thereafter, the surnames of Irish Gaelic clanns and septs and many of the Norman families became almost indistinguishable.
