The surname Kirkconnel was first found in Kirkcudbrightshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Chille Chuithbheirt), part of the present day Council Area of Dumfries and Galloway, former county in Southwestern Scotland, where they held a family seat they being a one time significant Clan of south western Scotland. In 1235, Michael Kirkconnel was Chief of the Clan and held all the lands of Kirconnel for himself and his clan.
