The surname Horsemynd is derived from the Old English words hors, which means horse, and mann, which means man or servant. 1

Early Origins of the Horsemynd family

The surname Horsemynd was first found in Warwickshire where Hugh le Horsman was listed in the Feet of Fines for 1226-1227. The Subsidy Rolls for Worcester included John le Horsman there in 1327 and later in Yorkshire, William Horsman was listed there in 1415. 2

The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 had three listings for the family: Agnes le Horseman, Buckinghamshire; Robert le Horsman, Oxfordshire; and Walter Horsman, Huntingdonshire. 3

Migration of the Horsemynd family

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Although many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, those who did see the shores of North America perceived great opportunities before them. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Horsemynd family emigrate to North America: Christopher Horsman settled in Fort Cumberland Nova Scotia in 1775; Marmaduke Horsman settled in New Jersey in 1677.
