What does the name Giblin mean?

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor as in 'the son of Gilbert,' from nickname Gib, diminutive Gib-lin. "Although I find no early instances there can be no doubt about the origin of this name." 1

Early Origins of the Giblin family

The surname Giblin was first found in Cornwall where Segerus Gibelin was registered in the Curia Regis Rolls for 1206. Later, Simon Gibeloun was registered as holding lands in the Subsidy Rolls for Suffolk in 1327. 2

In Ireland, the name was derived from the Gaelic Ó Gibealláin, Anglicized as "O'Gibellans, as they were formerly called, were noted as ecclesiastics in the diocese of Elphin." 3
