Of note was the Frankland Baronetcy, of Thirkelby (or Thirkleby.) This Baronetage of England, created on 24 December 1660 for William Frankland (c. 1640-1697.) "The name of Frankland has long been established in the western part of the West Riding [of Yorkshire], as at Giggleswick (Wh. C.). Hugh Francklande was a Yorkshire gentleman who contributed £50 for the defence of his country at the time of the expected Spanish invasion of 1588 (Sp.). The name of Franklan occurs in the Hundredorum Rolls, and it seems probable that Frankland is sometimes a corruption of Franklin. Migration of the Franklint familyThousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries.
