Etymology of DormarWhat does the name Dormar mean? The origin of this surname is intriguing. Both schools point to a French origin. This first believes that the name was from Amars or Amory, near Caen, France. There "Gilbert D'Amory had grants from Robert D'Oylley in Oxford, and was a benefactor to Eynsham Abbey (Mon. i. 265). In 1129 Roger and Robert de Amar witnessed the Charter of Oseney (Mon. ii. 137). About 1180 Ralph was Lord of Ilamars, Normandy, and 1198 Alice Daumari and Geoffry her son were of Buckinghamshire." 1 The second notes that a dormer is derived from the Middle French dormeor, meaning "sleeping room."
