The ancestors of the first families to use the name Crownie lived in ancient Scotland in the kingdom of Dalriada. The name was then used as a nickname for a person with blond hair. The Scottish name Crone was originally derived from the Gaelic word "cron", which means saffron, yellow-colored or dark, and refers to the complexion or hair coloring of the original bearer.
