The ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada is thought to be the home of the ancestors of the Croomy family. Their name comes from someone having lived in the place Crombie, in the parish of Aucterless in the shire of Aberdeen. The place-name Crombie was originally derived from the Gaelic term "crom," which means "crooked."

Early Origins of the Croomy family

The surname Croomy was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, on the lands of Crummy The land belonged to the Abbey of Culross, which was built on land gifted by Malcolm, 7th Earl of Fife, in 1217, during the reign of Alexander II.

Migration of the Croomy family to the New World and Oceana

Dalriadan families proliferated in North America. Their descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through Clan societies and highland games. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Croomy or a variant listed above: James Crombie settled in Boston Massachusetts in 1765; Leonard Crombie settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1754; William Crombie settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1868.
