Early Origins of the Castillo family

The surname Castillo was first found in Languedoc, where the family has held a family seat since ancient times.

Many of the family joined the Conquest of England in 1066 to fill the many vocations that arose. Henry de Castillun or Chastillon (fl. 1195), was Archdeacon of Canterbury and is first mentioned as a judge of the king's court in 1195. "In the records of fines for that year he is mentioned as Henry de Chastilon or Castilliun, but in those of 1196 he is always called Henry, archdeacon of Canterbury. It may therefore be presumed that he was appointed about the end of 1195 or the beginning of 1196. He may possibly be the same person as the Henry de Casteillun who in 1197 rendered an account of receipts and payments of the office of chamberlain of Condon for the two years beginning Whitsuntide 1195." 1

Emigration to New Zealand followed in the footsteps of the European explorers, such as Captain Cook (1769-70): first came sealers, whalers, missionaries, and traders. By 1838, the British New Zealand Company had begun buying land from the Maori tribes, and selling it to settlers, and, after the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, many British families set out on the arduous six month journey from Britain to Aotearoa to start a new life.
