Early Origins of the Bridgmend family

The surname Bridgmend was first found in Sussex where one of the first records of the name was John Brygeman who was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of that county in 1296. The next reference of the name was John Bregman who was listed in 1310 in Essex. [1]

A few years later, John Bruggemon was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Warwickshire of 1332. The same reference listed two versions of the following entry: William Breggeman and William atte Bregge. In the Yorkshire Poll Tax records of 1379, we found Johannes Brigeman. [2]

Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Among the first immigrants of the name Bridgmend, or a variant listed above to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were: Jacob Bridgemen who settled in Virginia in 1654; John Bridgeman settled in Virginia in 1663; Walter Bridgeman arrived in Philadelphia in 1684; Thomas Bridgman settled in Virginia in 1654.
