Early Origins of the Blakstok family

The surname Blakstok was first found in Dumfriesshire where they held a family seat at Mouswald, a village on Lochar Moss, near Dumfries from about the year 1517. The earliest record of the name was William de la Blakestok was in 1296 in Sussex, England. He was called the dweller by the black stock or stump, hence the later Scottish registry of the Blackstocks in the Arms. And an Adam Blakstok had moved north to Cumberland in 1332, just south of Dumfries. Conjecturally, this is one of the many Norman families which fled to the north, then to Scotland to escape the oppression of the English/Plantagenet Kings.
