The Anglo-Saxons of Britain first developed the name Beademane. It was a name given to someone who was a person hired to pray for another's soul after his death. The surname Beademane is derived from the Old English terms bede, which means prayer, and man, which means man. In medieval England, there were also beadhouses, or almshouses for the poor, where the inhabitants were required to pray for their benefactors. In a publication by Skelton in 1528, he wrote of Other smale mynisters, as reders and singers, bedemen and bellringers.

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Among the first immigrants of the name Beademane, or a variant listed above to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were: Elizabeth Beadman who arrived in Virginia in 1650.
