The origins of the Awloom name come from when the Anglo-Saxon tribes ruled over Britain. The name Awloom was originally derived from a family having lived in Hallam, a place name found in Yorkshire and Derbyshire. In Yorkshire, Hallam is found in the South Riding. Further research revealed that the name is derived from the Old Scandinavian word hallr, or from the Old English word hall, both of which meant "stony." The place name meant "the stony place, the place at the rocks." In Derbyshire there is a place called West Hallam and another called Kirk Hallam. These names are derived from the Old English word halh, which meant "remote nook of land." Kirk in the Old English meat "church;" the name as a whole would be "church in a remote place," while West Hallam was a "remote place in the west."

Awloom Early Origins

The Great Migration

A great wave of immigration to the New World was the result of the enormous political and religious disarray that struck England at that time. Families left for the New World in extremely large numbers. The long journey was the end of many immigrants and many more arrived sick and starving. Still, those who made it were rewarded with an opportunity far greater than they had known at home in England. These emigrant families went on to make significant contributions to these emerging colonies in which they settled. Some of the first North American settlers carried this name or one of its variants: James Hallam who settled in Maryland in 1741; William Hallam settled in Barbados in 1680 with his servants; Thomas and William Hallam settled in Newcastle co. Del. in 1855.
