The Aspyn name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the settlement of Aspinwall, which was in the parish of Aughton in Lancashire county. The name Aspinwall literally means the aspen-well, referring to a well near a grove of aspen trees.

Early Origins of the Aspyn family

The surname Aspyn was first found in Lancashire where they held a family seat for many centuries, and where, at an early time, probably well before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, they founded the town of Aspinall in that county.

Migration of the Aspyn family to the New World and Oceana

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Aspyn were among those contributors: Edward Aspinwall, who arrived in Salem, MA in 1630; William Aspinwall, his wife Elisabeth and their daughter Mary Aspinwall, who came to Charlestown, MA in 1630.
