Today's generation of the Session family bears a name that was brought to England by the migration wave that was started by the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Session family lived in Gloucestershire, at the manor of Siston, from whence their name was derived.

Early Origins of the Session family

The surname Session was first found in Gloucestershire where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Siston, held at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book, a survey of England taken by Duke William of Normandy after his conquest of England in Hastings in 1066 A.D. In this survey the village of Siston was held by Roger de Berkeley. Conjecturally they were descended from Roger, and as it was the tradition of Norman families, the second or third son usually adopted the name of his manor or lands.

United States Session migration to the United States +

The unstable environment in England at this time caused numerous families to board ships and leave in search of opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad in places like Ireland, Australia, and particularly the New World. The voyage was extremely difficult, however, and only taken at great expense. The cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels caused many to arrive diseased and starving, not to mention destitute from the enormous cost. Still opportunity in the emerging nations of Canada and the United States was far greater than at home and many went on to make important contributions to the cultures of their adopted countries. An examination of many early immigration records reveals that people bearing the name Session arrived in North America very early:

Session Settlers in United States in the 17th Century
  • George Session, aged 40, who arrived in Virginia in 1634 aboard the ship "Bonaventure" coming via St. Domingo 2
  • Judeth Session, who landed in Virginia in 1637 2
