Rugged coastal mountains and the windswept Hebrides islands were the home of the first family to use the name McCrosky. It was originally given to a person with blond hair. The Scottish name Crone was originally derived from the Gaelic word "cron", which means saffron, yellow-colored or dark, and refers to the complexion or hair coloring of the original bearer.

The surname McCrosky was first found in Argyllshire (Gaelic erra Ghaidheal), the region of western Scotland corresponding roughly with the ancient Kingdom of Dál Riata, in the Strathclyde region of Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Argyll and Bute, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

In the American War of Independence, many Scots who remained loyal to the Crown re-settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists.
