This name was first used in England during the 15th century, and was originally derived from the Old French Jehanne, which also had biblical origins from Johannes. "This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor, 'the son of Jan,' from diminutive Janet or Janot." 1 Early Origins of the Jannet familyThe surname Jannet was first found in Yorkshire, where Willelmus filius Jonet was listed in the Subsidy Rolls for 1297. A few years later at Wakefield, Jonot (with no forename ) was listed in 1308 and down in Cornwall, we found John Joney in 1297. Migration of the Jannet familyThousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Jannet were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: John Jennet, who sailed to Pennsylvania in 1682. Peter Jannett journeyed to Maryland in 1776 and N. Janett sailed to New York in 1823.
