Etymology of Wethell

What does the name Wethell mean?

The Wethell surname derives from the Old English words "hwit," meaning "white," and "heall," meaning "a hall," or large house. Thus as a surname, Wethell was likely first used by someone who lived or worked in such a building. One such building was the palace of Whitehall, London, the main residence of the English monarch from 1530 to 1698.

Early Origins of the Wethell family

The surname Wethell was first found in Staffordshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the 13th century when they held estates in that shire.
