The vast movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of England of 1066 brought the Twombley family name to the British Isles. They lived in Cheshire, at Twemlow, a civil parish, containing the village of Twemlow Green.

The surname Twombley was first found in Cheshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times as Lords of the manor of Hatherton in that shire. Conjecturally they are descended from William Malbank who was holder of the village of Hatherton at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book in 1086, a census initiated by William the Conqueror after his conquest of England in 1066 A.D. 1
