England Early Origins of the Tunnard familyThe surname Tunnard was first found in Cambridgeshire where Augustrin Tunherd was listed in the Hundredorum Rolls for 1279. A few years later, again in Cambridgeshire, we found Robert le Tunherd in the Subsidy Rolls for 1327. The name is derived from the Old English *tun-hierde meaning 'guardian of the village or town animals'. Johannes filius Tunherd in the Subsidy Rolls for Cambridgeshire in 1321 may mean 'son of the town-herd' 1 but we may have an unrecorded Old English word *Tunheard. cf. Tonhardus which was listed in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk in 1066-1087. 2 3 Ancient Somerset records show Adam Tonhurde, 1 Edward III (registered during the first year of reign of King Edeard III.) 4 "An ancient Lincolnshire family. In 1333 the name occurs as Tonnehyrd, and in 1381 as Tunherd. The last syllable looks like the Anglo-Saxon hyrd, a keeper or herdsman, while the former may be tun, any enclosure, village, town, &c. In this case, the name may signify the 'townherd,' or herdsman, one to whom was entrusted the care of the common herd of a town or village, a well-known office or employment in the Middle Ages." 5 Early History of the Tunnard familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Tunnard research.
