Early Origins of the Tissel family

The surname Tissel was first found in Northumberland where they held a family seat. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the year 1191 when Richard Twisle held estates in Durham, although it is likely that the main branch of the family held a family seat in Northumberland on the border at Twizel Castle near Coldstream but Northumberland was one of the few counties in England which was not part of the census known as the Domesday Book taken in 1086. This, because Malcolm Canmore of Scotland laid claim to the territory of Northumberland. Agnes Twyzel of Berwick had her lands restored to her by King Edward 1st after giving him allegiance after his brief conquest of Scotland in 1296.
