The ancient surname Strudwicke dates back to Saxon times as early records show "a stród wíc occurs in a Sussex charter dated A.D. 956." 1 The name literally means "dweller at the bushy place [v. under Stroud, and + Old English wíc, a place]." 1

The surname Strudwicke was first found in Sussex, at Strudgwick in Kirdford. One of the first records of the family was Richard Strudwick who held lands in Suffolk in 1524, according to the Subsidy Rolls of that time. Later, Richard Strudewyke was listed in the Feet of Fines for Essex in 1546 and John Strudwicke was listed as holding lands in Surrey in 1583. 2
