England Etymology of StaddonWhat does the name Staddon mean? The Staddon surname belongs to the class of local names, derived from a place name where the first bearer lived or held land. Staddon is derived from the Old English elements "stod," meaning "stud" and "dun," meaning "hill." There were at least six places in Devon alone from which the surname could have come. Early Origins of the Staddon familyThe surname Staddon was first found in Devon, 1 where Hugh de Stoddon was listed in the Pipe Rolls of 1200. It is generally thought the name came from an unidentified place in Devon, but the name may have also originated in Sussex where Symon de Stoddenn was recorded in 1296 and later, Jacobus de Stoddenne was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of 1332. In this latter case, the name may elude to Studding’s Farm in Herstmonceux, Sussex. 2 Early History of the Staddon familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Staddon research.
