The present generation of the Rosbotham family is only the most recent to bear a name that dates back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. Their name comes from having lived in Lancashire where this local surname was derived from the local at the roe-bottom a residence in the depressed ground frequented by deer. Rosbotham is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree.

The surname Rosbotham was first found in Lancashire from very ancient times and were Lords of the Manor of Rowbottom near Ashton-under-Lyne in that shire. Some say they held a family seat there prior to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 A.D.

Migration of the Rosbotham family to the New World and Oceana

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Rosbotham were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: George Robotham who settled in Jamaica in 1762; William Robotham arrived in New York in 1679; Anne Robotham arrived in Pennsylvania in 1683; William Henry Robothan arrived in Pennsylvania in 1881.
