What does the name Portus mean?

The name Portus reached English shores for the first time with the ancestors of the Portus family as they migrated following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Portus family lived in Norfolk. Thae name could also be an occupational name. Occupational names that were derived from the common trades of the medieval era transcended European cultural and linguistic boundaries. In this case, the term porcker was someone who tended pigs.

Faced with persecution and starvation at home, the open frontiers and generally less oppressive social environment of the New World seemed tantalizing indeed to many English people.
