Philippes History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The Philippes family can find its origins within the landscape of Medieval France, particularly in that coastal region once known as Normandy. Their name is derived from the ancient Greek name Phillippos, which is composed of the elements philos, meaning love, and hippos, meaning horse, and indicated a person who loved horses.

Early Origins of the Philippes family

The surname Philippes was first found in Normandy (French: Normandie), the former Duchy of Normandy, where they held a family seat as an aristocratic family at Marigny. Conjecturally, this family may be descended from Phillip, the Count of Namur, but there have been many Kings of this name including Philip I, King of France, King Philip Augustus, Philip the Bold, Philip of Valois, or Philip of France, Duke of Burgundy, and many saints, bishops, Dukes, and other nobility and place names.

Philippes Spelling Variations

Changes of spelling have occurred in most surnames. The earliest explanation is that during the early development of the French language, names were not yet fixed in spelling. Usually a person gave his version of his name, phonetically, to a scribe, a priest, or a recorder. This depended on accent, and local accents frequently changed the spelling of a name. Some variables were adopted by different branches of the family name. Hence, there are some spelling variations of the name Philippes, including Philippe, Phillippe, Phillippes, Philippes, Philipp, Phillipp, Phelipe, Phelippe, Phellippe, Phellippes, Philipe, Phillipes, Philip, Phillip and many more.

Migration of the Philippes family to the New World and Oceana

In 1643, 109 years after the first landings by Cartier, there were only about 300 people in Quebec. Migration was slow. The fur trade attracted migrants, both noble and commoner. By 1675, there were 7000 French in Quebec. By the same year the French Acadian presence in the Maritimes had reached 500. The French founded Lower Canada, thus becoming one of the two great founding nations of Canada. The family name Philippes has made many distinguished contributions in France and New France to the world of science, culture, religion, and education. Amongst the settlers in North America with this distinguished name Philippes were Francisco Phelipe, with his wife Maria and three sons settled in New Orleans La. in 1779; Claude Philipe and his wife settled in Virginia in 1700; Mr. Phillip settled in Virginia in 1623.
