Etymology of Patson

The name Patson was spawned by the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture that ruled a majority of Britain. It comes from the baptismal name for Patrick. In the religious naming tradition the Patson surname was bestowed in honor of a religious figure. In Europe, the Christian Church was one of the most powerful influences on the formation of given names. Alternatively, the name could have been derived from the Middle English word "pate" which meant "head" or "skull". In this latter case, the name would have been a nickname.

Richard Pate (1516-1588), English founder of the Cheltenham grammar school, commonly described as of Minsterworth, Gloucestershire. In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Patsons to arrive on North American shores: Richard Pate, who settled in Virginia in 1636; as did William Pate in 1637; John Pate in 1651; Henry and Catherine Pate in 1656; and Elizabeth Pate in 1663..
