The name Okden is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a product of when the family lived near an oak valley, or came from the place called Ogden, in West Yorkshire. Okden is a local surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. There are a variety of types of local surnames, some of which include: topographic surnames, which could be given to a person who lived beside any physical feature, such as a hill, stream, church or type of tree. Habitation names form the other broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Other local names are derived from the names of houses, manors, estates, regions, and entire counties. The surname Okden derives from the Old English words "ac" and "denu," which mean "oak" and "valley," respectively. The surname Okden originated in Somerset, but became prominent in Lancashire, where members of the family had been settled since the early Middle Ages.

Okden Early Origins

The surname Okden was first found in West Yorkshire at Ogden, a small hamlet north of Halifax. Historically part of Lancashire, this hamlet was where Elias de Akeden, de Aggeden was listed the Assize Rolls of that shire in 1246. Almost one hundred years later, Richard de Okeden was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Lancashire in 1332. [1]CITATION[CLOSE]
