Early Origins of the Murthy family

The surname Murthy was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. We found this very interesting entry for the family which we feel that we should pass on in its entirety.

"The manor of Talland [in the parish of Talland, Cornwall] belonged for many generations to a family called Morth, or Murth, who possessed the barton and resided on it in the days of Carew. Relating to this family, that author records the following anecdote.- 'One of their ancestors within the memory of the next neighbour to the house, called Prake, burdened with 110 years of age, entertained a French miller, as that people for such idle occupations prove more handy than our own. But this fellow's service proved commodious in, the worst sense. For when not long after his acceptance, wars grew between us and France, he stealeth over into his own country, and returneth privily back again with a French crew, surpriseth suddenly his master and his guest at a Christmas supper, carrieth them speedily into Lantreghey, and forceth the gentleman to redeem his enlargement with the sale of a great part of his revenues.' The manor of Talland is now the property of John Morth Woolcombe, Esq. of Ashbury in Devon, by inheritance from the family of Morth." 1
