Etymology of Mitchie

What does the name Mitchie mean?

The age-old Hebrides islands and the west coast of Scotland are the ancestral home of the Mitchie family. Their name comes from the biblical personal name Michael. This name made its way into Scotland after the Norman Conquest in the softened French form Michel.

Early Origins of the Mitchie family

The surname Mitchie was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, where they held a family seat in the lands of Corryhoul from about the year 1300. Traditionally the Clan is descended from a Michael MacDonald of the branch known as the MacDonalds of Keppoch.

Mitchie Spelling Variations

Medieval spelling was at best an intuitive process, and translation between Gaelic and English was no more effective. These factors caused an enormous number of spelling variations in Dalriadan names. In fact, it was not uncommon to see a father and son who spelled their name differently. Over the years, Mitchie has been spelled Michie, Mitchie, Mitchy, Michy, Mitchey, Michey and others.

Mitchie migration to New Zealand +

Emigration to New Zealand followed in the footsteps of the European explorers, such as Captain Cook (1769-70): first came sealers, whalers, missionaries, and traders. By 1838, the British New Zealand Company had begun buying land from the Maori tribes, and selling it to settlers, and, after the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, many British families set out on the arduous six month journey from Britain to Aotearoa to start a new life. Early immigrants include:
