Etymology of Mitchey

What does the name Mitchey mean?

The Mitchey family history stretches back to the clans of the Dalriadan kingdom on the sea-swept Hebrides islands and mountainous western coast of Scotland. The name Mitchey is derived from the biblical personal name Michael. This name made its way into Scotland after the Norman Conquest in the softened French form Michel.

Early Origins of the Mitchey family

The surname Mitchey was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, where they held a family seat in the lands of Corryhoul from about the year 1300. Traditionally the Clan is descended from a Michael MacDonald of the branch known as the MacDonalds of Keppoch.

Migration of the Mitchey family

Settlers from Scotland put down roots in communities all along the east coast of North America. Some moved north from the American colonies to Canada as United Empire Loyalists during the American War of Independence. As Clan societies and highland games started in North America in the 20th century many Scots rediscovered parts of their heritage. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Mitchey were among those contributors: Alexander Michie arrived in America in 1762. John Michey arrived in Jamaica in 1716 and moved to Virginia in the same year.
