Etymology of Magdelyn

What does the name Magdelyn mean?

The distinguished surname Magdelyn is derived from the Hebrew "Magdalen," meaning "woman of Magdala." This name was also used, fairly infrequently, as a Christian name during the 13th century.

Early Origins of the Magdelyn family

The surname Magdelyn was first found in Oxfordshire, where the Magdelyn family was anciently seated as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066; the language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. However, many Saxon surnames survived, and the family name Magdelyn was first referenced in the 13th century, when the Magdelyn family held estates in Oxfordshire.

Migration of the Magdelyn family

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Magdelyns to arrive on North American shores: Joane Maudlin, who settled in Virginia in 1666; Strangeman Modglin, who is believed to have emigrated from Scotland to North Carolina during the mid-18th century, and John Maudlin, who arrived in Detroit in 1869..
