The surname MacDwyer was first found in County Sligo (Irish: Sligeach), in the province of Connacht in Northwestern Ireland, where three MacDyers obtained pardons in 1593. A landowner from County Donegal is listed in an inquisition of 1632 as Phelim MacDavir.
