Etymology of Landrey

What does the name Landrey mean?

The majestic country of France is the ancestral homeland of the distinguished surname Landrey.The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in France were the patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name. The patronyms were derived from a variety of given names that were of many different origins. As well as the names of the saints of the Christian Church, many of the most common French surnames are derived from personal names of Germanic origin. The name Landrey is derived from the ancient Greek name Andreas, which means "manly".

Early Origins of the Landrey family

The surname Landrey was first found in Lorraine at Barrois, part of the duchy of Bar, which in the Middle Ages was part of the duchy of Lorraine. Landry is now a commune in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.

Although their first mention was in Lorraine, they branched north to Artois, south to Lyonnais and Bourgogne. One branch moved west into Brittany (French: Bretagne). The main stem of the family, however, were elevated to the nobility as Barons de Landres and the Comtes de Briey, Barons de Landres. Another branch of the family went eastward over the border into Luxembourg. The family flourished until the French Revolution in 1789 when most of the estates of this prestigious family were lost.

Guillaume Landry, born in 1626, son of Mathurin and Damiane (née Desavin), travelled from Perche, France and settled at île d'Orléans, Quebec on 2nd April 1656. He married Gabrielle Barre in Quebec on 14th October 1659. Gabrielle passed away in 1688 and Guillaume died in Sainte-Famille on 8th January 1689. 1
