What does the name Kenville mean?

The name Kenville is derived from the French word "chêne," which means "oak". There is a municipality in France called Quenne, which is located in the department of the Yonne, in the district of Auxerre. Most variations of this surname are derived from location names where there had no doubt been oak trees at one time. For example, the name Quenneville, can be translated as "the village of oaks". 1

Early Origins of the Kenville family

The surname Kenville was first found in Normandy (French: Normandie), the former Duchy of Normandy, where this distinguished family held a family seat, and were members of aristocratic families of that region. 1

The family branched to Picardy and Paris and in 1668 were elevated to the nobility as the Barons of Lusbeke. In the 16th century, bearers of Quesnel were the Seigneurs of Boi-su-Vicomte and gave counsel to the Parliament of Rouen. In the 17th century Pasquier Quesnel was a noted French theologian (1634-1719), and François Quesnay was a distinguished economist and Doctor (1694-1774). Later in Canada, Joseph Quesnel became a distinguished Canadian poet (1749-1809). Judge Jules Quesnay de Beaurepaire was a distinguished jurist (1838-1923).

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Olivier Quesnel who settled at Duquesnel, Quebec, in 1676 from Normandy, and was later followed by Jacques Quesnel in 1760; also from Normandy; Jean Quenneville, who came from Normandy to Canada and who marriage was registered at Notre-Dame de Montré.
