The ancient roots of the Ilston family name are in the Anglo-Saxon culture. The name Ilston comes from when the family lived in the parish of Hilton found in several locations including Derby, Dorset, Durham, Staffordshire and the North Riding of Yorkshire. The surname Ilston is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill. In this case the original bearers of the surname Ilston lived in the hill-town.

Ilston Early Origins

The surname Ilston was first found in Durham, now in the area of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England where one of the first records of the name was Robert Hylton, 1st Baron Hylton (d. 1322.) His son, Alexander, was called to Parliament in 1332 and 1335. This first line of Barons Hylton continued for 424 years ending with John Hylton, the 18th Baron Hylton (1699-1746.) Hylton Castle is now a ruined stone castle in the North Hylton and is owned by English Heritage. "It was the residence of the Hyltons from the time of King Athelstan to the year 1746, and the building has the arms of that ancient family and its alliances engraven on it in numerous places; its battlements are ornamented with statues, and its corners with circular turrets." The Great Migration

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Ilston arrived in North America very early: Hugh Hilton, who settled in Virginia in 1619, a year before the "Mayflower"; Mary Hilton settled in Plymouth Massachusetts in 1623; William Hilton settled in Plymouth with his wife and two children in 1623..
